The influence of residual stress on fatigue crack growth rates of additively manufactured Type 304L stainless steel

چکیده

To examine the influence of residual stress on mechanical performance, specifically fatigue crack growth resistance, additively manufactured (AM) Type 304L stainless steel produced by directed energy deposition (DED) was evaluated and compared to conventional wrought 304/304L steel. Increasing decreasing alternating intensity factor (?K) tests were used assess behavior over a range rates in near threshold regime (<10-8 m/cycle). Bulk (Kres) profiles specimen measured using incremental slitting method. Tensile at edges DED materials led positive values Kres faster material as same applied ?K. Correcting for effects closure commercially available shows that are similar ?K lower than 6 MPa·m0.5.

Effect of Mean Stress on Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Stainless Steel 304L

Stainless steel has been employed in many engineering applications ranging from pharmaceutical equipment to piping in the nuclear reactors and storage to chemical products. In this attempt, simulation of fatigue crack growth based on experimental results of austenitic stainless steel 304L was presented using AFGROW code when NASGRO mode laws adopted. Double through crack at hole specimen is use...

Influence of Residual Stress Field on the Fatigue Crack Propagation in Prestressing Steel Wires

This paper deals with the effect of several residual stress profiles on the fatigue crack propagation in prestressing steel wires subjected to tension loading or bending moment. To this end, a computer program was developed to evaluate the crack front evolution on the basis of the Walker law. Results demonstrate that the absence of residual stresses makes the crack propagate towards a preferent...

Stress Corrosion Crack Growth Mechanism on SUS316L Stainless Steel

The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of stainless steel is one of the biggest problems for maintaining atomic power and chemical plants. However the mechanism has not been solved because of difficulty in observing hydrogen movement. In order to solve this problem, the author has developed a new SCC test method that enables the super Kelvin force microscope (SKFM) and the Kelvin force microscope ...

Effect of Compressive Residual Stress on the Corner Crack Growth

In the present study, plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) concept and three dimensional (3D) finite element methods (FEM) are used to study the effect of compressive residual stress field on the fatigue crack growth from a hole. To investigate the effect of compressive residual stress on crack opening levels and crack shape evolution, Carlson’s experiments were simulated. Crack shape evolut...

Biaxial High Cycle Fatigue of a Type 304L Stainless Steel: Cyclic Strains and Crack Initiation Detection by Digital Image Correlation

A series of biaxial High Cycle Fatigue tests at room temperature is performed to build up an extensive and well-documented database. The testing specimen is a maltese cross thinned in its centre with non homogeneous strain/stress fields. The experimental protocol uses exclusively full-field strain measurements. The strains (cyclic and residual) as well as the crack initiation detection are obta...
